Srinagar, Jul 17 (KNO): The Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) on Friday warned stakeholders at famous tourist destination Drung in Tangmarg against the use of polythene and plastic, stating that strict action will be taken against those violating the ban.
GDA Chief Executive Officer Tariq Hussain, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that protecting the natural ecosystem of Drung is essential for sustaining tourism and the livelihoods of people dependent on the destination.
The CEO said the water body at Drung caters to several habitations and any form of pollution can have long term consequences for the environment and local communities.
He stressed the need for a sense of belongingness among residents, business operators and visitors to ensure cleanliness of the tourist spot.
"Drung serves as a source of livelihood for many. Stakeholders must understand that protecting this place is directly linked with protecting their own interests," Hussain said.
He warned that the administration will take tough measures against those found using polythene and plastic material despite repeated advisories.
"We urge everyone to stop using such material. Any violation will invite strict action. We have to work together to keep tourist destinations be it Gulmarg, Drung or any other clean and preserve its ecological importance," he added.
It is noteworthy that the GDA on Friday conducted a cleanliness drive at Drung, a popular tourist destination, where officials and stakeholders participated in efforts to improve sanitation and protect the local water body—(KNO)
